Are you and your family looking for a vacation that is off the beaten path? Are you tired of going to the same Amusement Parks or the same campground that you do each year? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then check out these unique family vacation ideas. They are sure to take you out of the ordinary and provide you all with some interesting memories to share for years to come.
Plymouth Plantation: Plymouth, Massachusetts
This vacation spot is guaranteed to be unlike any other that you have experienced. Imagine stepping back in time to the early 1600s when the first people arrived here on the Mayflower. Here you and your children can see the actual Plymouth Rock (which is much smaller these days than it was back then, due to guests taking a piece of it home with them over the years). You can tour the Mayflower II, a full-size replica of the boat on which the pilgrims arrived, explore a 17th-century village, and interact with Native Americans who live on the Wampanoag Homesite.
Galapagos Islands: Ecuador
It may a bit cost prohibitive depending on the size of your traveling party, but if you can swing it the Galapagos Islands are a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The isolated location and its inhabitants found just off of Ecuador, were the original inspiration for Darwin’s theory of evolution. For all intents and purposes, the inhabitants of the island have never experienced a predatory animal and as such, there are very trusting of humans which makes them easy to approach. That being said, be clear that tourism on this island is heavily regulated. Tours are often led by naturalist guides who are well versed in the ways of the island. There are a number of eco-friendly tourism packages available through a variety of travel groups and these are probably your best bet for booking your trip.
Swim with the Manatees of Crystal River Florida
Located just a stone’s throw from Orlando and Tampa Florida is the only place in the entire world where you and your family can swim with manatees in their native environment. Though they are there throughout the year, this trip is best booked in the winter as they tend to be greater in numbers during that time of the year. There are a number of local organizations who provide snorkeling and diving outings that assist you in interacting with these majestic mammals.
